Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
