EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
