No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
